Dr. Ishwarlal Jialal Honored with 2003 AACC Award


Melville, N.Y. (June 12, 2003) - Ishwarlal Jialal, MD, PhD, DABCC, FACB has been named the recipient of the 2003 American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) Award for Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Chemistry in a Selected Area of Research. The annual AACC award, sponsored by Olympus, this year recognizes Dr. Jialal for his groundbreaking work in nutrition, clinical biochemistry, atherosclerosis, metabolism and free radical biology. The award will be presented to Dr. Jialal on July 20 at the opening plenary session of the AACC annual meeting and clinical exposition in Philadelphia.

Dr. Jialal is the Robert E. Stowell Endowed Chair in Experimental Pathology, director of the Laboratory for Atherosclerosis and Metabolic Research, and professor of Pathology and Internal Medicine (Endocrinology, Clinical Nutrition and Vascular Medicine) at the University of California, Davis Medical Center. A widely recognized research scientist, he has published more than 285 papers and invited reviews.

Dr. Jialal has also been the recipient of numerous prior awards. These include the American Heart Association (AHA) Young Investigator Award; Fellow, Council of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, AHA; the VERIS Award for Nutrition Research; the Centrum Center Nutrition Science Award; the Outstanding Clinical Chemist Award from the Texas Section, AACC; the International Hermes Prize for Vitamin Research; the Bennie Zak Award for Outstanding Research, Lipids and Lipoproteins Division, AACC; the Grace Goldsmith Award from the American College of Nutrition; and the Distinguished Scientist Award from the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry.

A native of Natal, South Africa, Dr. Jialal graduated from the University of Natal Medical School in 1983. Later, he undertook fellowships at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School and the University of Washington in Seattle. He then joined the faculty of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and later became Professor of Internal Medicine and Pathology, Director of the Division of Clinical Biochemistry and Human Metabolism. He has also held the C. Vincent Prothro Chair in Human Nutrition Research. He came to the UC Davis campus in 2002.
