Olympus Unveils 2004-2005 Roadmap for Zuiko Digital Specific LensesTM

Exciting Lineup For Olympus E-System, World's First 100% Digital Interchangeable Lens SLR System

Melville, New York, October 15, 2003 - Olympus America Inc. has announced a roadmap for the development of new interchangeable Zuiko Digital Specific LensesTM in 2004 and 2005 for the Olympus E-System, the world's first 100% all-digital interchangeable lens SLR system. The new Zuiko Digital Specific Lenses to be introduced include an 11-22mm/F2.8-3.5 wide-angle zoom lens (equivalent to 22-44mm on a 35mm film camera), plus additional zoom lenses including an ultra-wide angle lens, and a fast telephoto lens with a fixed focal length. Olympus is developing the new Zuiko Digital Specific Lenses to provide photographers with the best quality and speed.

"This roadmap for developing new lenses for the Olympus E-System demonstrates our long-term planning and commitment to this system and our dedication to the professional photography market," said John Knaur, senior marketing manager, Olympus America Inc. "As these new lenses join our current lineup of Zuiko Digital Specific Lenses, the Olympus E-System will continually expand the creative possibilities for professional photographers."

Zuiko Digital Specific Lenses are based on the new Four Thirds System, an open standard for digital SLR cameras and interchangeable lens systems that utilize a 4/3-type image sensor. The Four Thirds System is designed to achieve an optimal balance between image quality, camera and lens size, and system expandability. The system maximizes the performance of image sensors and lenses with a 100% digital-from-the-ground-up design.

The Zuiko 11-22mm lens will be followed by an even wider-angle zoom lens to meet today's growing demand for wide-angle lenses. Other fast single focal length telephoto lenses will join the current 300mm F2.8 lens (600mm film equivalent) in 2004. Future plans include new large-aperture telephoto lenses that capitalize on the ability of the Four Thirds System to realize large apertures with minimum weight and bulk, as well as other types of bright, large-aperture fixed lenses, large-aperture standard zoom lenses, and telephoto zoom lenses.

Zuiko Digital Specific Lenses are designed specifically for digital capture with smart technology that delivers edge-to-edge sharpness with reduced distortion and shading. The lenses are designed to perfectly match the imager so light strikes the sensor directly, ensuring rich, accurate colors, sharp contrasts and bright images even at the edges. Zuiko Digital Specific Lenses deliver higher resolutions, faster aperture speeds and focusing, and more compact sizes than equivalent 35mm lenses built for digital.

Olympus introduced the E-1 professional Digital SLR, the first camera in the Olympus E-System, along with an initial round of Zuiko Digital Specific Lenses and E-Accessories to the market in October 2003, including:

  • 14-54mm f2.8-3.5 (28mm - 108mm equiv. for 35mm film camera)
  • 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 (100mm - 400mm equiv. for 35mm)
  • 50mm f2.0 1:2 Macro (100mm Macro equiv. for 35mm)
  • 300mm f2.8 Super Telephoto (600mm equiv. for 35mm)
  • TC14 1.4X Teleconverter (1.4X - 1 stop equiv. for 35mm)
