Olympus Offers UIS2 Optical System

Clinical and Educational Labs Benefit from Higher Performance and Value of Eco-Friendly Plan Optics

Orlando, FL, July 26, 2005 - Olympus, a world leader and recognized innovator in developing new optical technologies, now offers the UIS2 Microscope Optical System. The optics allow virtually all Olympus microscope users to enjoy a host of benefits, including aberration-free Plan performance, generally higher numerical apertures (NAs) and longer working distances, and higher transmission rates from the ultraviolet (UV) light spectrum through to the infrared (IR). Importantly for clinical laboratory users, the high-performance plan optical system is also eco-friendly, with a completely lead-free glass design, and will be offered at virtually the same pricing as achromat optics.

"As optical innovators, we set out to design a system of infinity plan optics that provided superior performance while protecting the environment," said George E. Steares, group vice president of the Olympus America Scientific Equipment Group. "Our new glass offers extraordinary performance enhancements while eliminating lead in the manufacturing process. And we have done it without driving up the cost. Many microscope users in clinical labs will now be able to experience the beauty of plan optical performance for the first time."

Olympus UIS2 optics have improved light gathering ability, with higher NAs overall, and many offer improved working distances as well. All of the optics are designed to fit on current Olympus microscope models without retrofitting.

The UIS2 series includes a full set of Plan C N optics that will replace many achromat objectives for basic brightfield work; and a series of clinical objectives for diagnosticians and educators, among many other optics.

The patent-pending glass designs offer users even clearer, brighter images, with higher signal-to-noise performance and better transmission beyond the visible spectrum for capturing low-light images. In addition to the optics suitability for clinical laboratory work, there are numerous ultra-high-performance Super Plan Apo objectives for life science researchers; UPlan Fluorite N objectives designed for research fluorescence, polarized light microscopy and DIC; a line of polarized light and phase contrast objectives; and more. Importantly, the objectives also offer apochromatic focus correction in the near IR spectrum. DIC image contrast is enhanced and images are more even from edge to edge; the unification of back focal plane positions results in fewer DIC prisms overall.

"Olympus is dedicated to environmentally conscious product design," added Steares, "and we continue to enhance optical performance and bring cost benefits to the user - at the same time we develop safer technologies."
