Olympus Introduces Endo Capsule In The United States

High-Resolution Endo Capsule, Part of EnteroPro Total Small Bowel Solution Now Available

Center Valley, PA, September 17, 2007- Olympus, a precision technology leader creating innovative opto-digital solutions in healthcare, life science and consumer electronics products, today announced the Endo Capsule is commercially available for the visualization of the small bowel mucosa. The high-resolution system redefines capsule endoscopy by combining the operational ease and efficiency of capsule endoscopes with the outstanding performance and opto-digital technology that has made Olympus a world leader in endoscopy. Endo Capsule is part of Olympus' “EnteroPro” brand, the first total solution of its kind offered by one manufacturer designed to help physicians diagnose and treat small bowel abnormalities.

Endo Capsule offers unique features that provide physicians with unprecedented imaging capabilities of the small bowel, including high resolution, a wider field of view and an enhanced depth of field, automatic brightness control, advanced color reproduction and structure enhancement. A portable, lightweight real-time viewer conveniently allows physicians to verify its full functionality before the patient ingests the capsule. Endo Capsule can easily be activated or deactivated, if needed, to conserve battery power prior to ingestion. Patients carry Endo Capsule's data recorder in a lightweight harness that is convenient and comfortable to wear, allowing them to conduct daily activities while the capsule is recording images.

“I have been impressed with the image quality of Endo Capsule,” said David Cave, M.D., PhD, professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and director of clinical gastroenterology research at UMass Medical Center. “Since capsule endoscopy is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure, using a capsule that offers the best image quality is essential to help physicians spot abnormalities,” added Dr. Cave, the principal investigator who evaluated Endo Capsule in clinical trials.

Endo Capsule, one of Olympus' many diagnostic and treatment solutions in the field of GI, is an integral part of the EnteroPro brand, which was launched in North America in May . EnteroPro has been established by Olympus to increase the efficiencies of small bowel procedures and provide physicians with a total small bowel solution. In addition to the Endo Capsule, EnteroPro also includes the recently launched Single Balloon Enteroscope system (SBE) and a broad range of EndoTherapy devices.

Healthcare professionals across the country will be able to experience these healthcare innovations from Olympus by visiting Olympus OnSite™, the company's award-winning state-of-the-art mobile showroom. For details on the showroom's tour schedule and other information visit www.olympusonsite.com.

Endo Capsule Features
Endo Capsule, which includes the capsule endoscope, the data recorder with patient harness, the real-time viewer, as well as a computer workstation and a monitor, is the latest among many solutions developed by Olympus to help physicians observe and treat a broad range of conditions in the GI tract. Endo Capsule measures only 11 mm (0.43 inches) in diameter and 26 mm (1.02 inches) in length, and is equipped with sophisticated micro-machine technology. Sensitive, high-resolution Charge Coupled Device (CCD) technology provides clear and vivid imaging. The wider field of view (145 degrees) and enhanced depth of field (0-20 mm*) are designed to optimize observation. Six white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) ensure a clear field of view. Automatic brightness control, applied from conventional endoscope technology, adjusts illumination to maintain optimal imaging, even under the most demanding conditions. Endo Capsule's structure enhancement feature allows for the visualization of details in the small bowel. A built-in capsule antenna transmits two images per second to the data recorder. Recording images can be obtained for approximately eight hours*.

Endo Capsule Background
Olympus' aim is to contribute to the advancement of safe, uncomplicated and highly productive medical observation and treatment. Since the early 1990s, Olympus has been conducting research and development activities on capsule endoscopy as a future technology, applying micro-machine, nano and other advanced technologies.

In December 2004, Olympus exhibited basic capsule endoscope technologies and additional future technologies at its 85 th Anniversary Technology Fair in Japan. Keen interest shown by visitors indicated a large expectation for the practical contribution of a capsule endoscope equipped with technologies developed by the leading endoscope manufacturer. Responding to such requests, Olympus first launched Endo Capsule for the observation of small bowel abnormalities in Europe in October 2005 at the 13 th United European Gastroenterology Week (UEGW) in Copenhagen, Denmark. In the meantime, Endo Capsule has also become commercially available in Australia, New Zealand and several Asian countries.
