Olympus Acquires Optical Analysis Corporation’s Microscope Business
Will Sell Microscope and Imaging Systems Directly in New England and Upper Midwest

CENTER VALLEY, PA., March 23, 2009 – Olympus America Inc. has announced an asset purchase agreement with Optical Analysis Corporation, a distributor and value added reseller of scientific instrumentation and systems based in Nashua, NH.  Effective April 1, Olympus will have purchased Optical Analysis’ microscope, imaging and image analysis business, and will begin working directly with Optical Analysis’ microscope customers in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Indiana and parts of Illinois and Michigan.

“We are delighted to be able to serve customers in these key areas with Olympus’ special combination of excellent products, enhanced service and comprehensive support,” said Osamu Joji, Olympus America's Vice President and General Manager of the Scientific Equipment Group.  “Researchers, clinicians, physicians and educators throughout this region will benefit.” Olympus offers a combination of direct and dealer sales, depending on the region, to ensure that it can provide the best knowledge, products and service to microscope users across the U.S.

Optical Analysis will also benefit from the change.  “We have been looking for a way to streamline our business and move into other business areas,” said Richard Boone, President of Optical Analysis.  “With Olympus purchasing our microscope and imaging business, we are free to concentrate on these other ventures, and our customers will have the benefit of Olympus’ renowned training and service organization.”  Boone and his partner, vice president Keith Magnant, purchased Optical Analysis from a prior owner in 2003.

Under the agreement, Optical Analysis will retain its corporate name along with certain other assets.  The company currently employs about 30 individuals, and those working primarily in Olympus sales and service will be able to apply to Olympus to continue in their positions under the new structure.

Optical Analysis microscopy customers will find the transition seamless, as virtually all use Olympus equipment already; some may even continue working with the same person they had worked with before.  The companies will work closely together throughout the transition period to ensure that the changeover is smooth and that every laboratory’s individual needs are accommodated.
