Olympus Announces 3.34 Megapixel Digital Camera with Sound

PMA BOOTH #N131, Las Vegas, NV—Olympus America Inc., the world leader in film and filmless photography, today announced at the Photo Marketing Association Conference (PMA), the C-3030 ZOOM 3.34 Megapixel (2048 x 1536) filmless digital zoom camera to its line of award-winning digital cameras.

Advancing the technology of its predecessors, the Olympus C-2000 and C-2020 world-wide best-selling digital cameras, the C-3030 ZOOM is the first Olympus filmless camera to use both USB and serial connectivity; a 3.34 Megapixel CCD; 3X Zoom 32-96mm equivalent all-glass lens with continuous 2.5X digital telephoto; QuickTime Movie capability with sound; 15 modes of resolution, including 5 uncompressed tiff modes; Infrared Remote; and an improved 6 mode flash with a new slow syncro with red-eye reduction mode. The new C-3030 ZOOM is the only camera in its class to offer a 32MB SDRAM buffer for rapid shooting at 3.5 frames per second and real time shooting at all times—all for $999.

QuickTime Video with Sound
The new QuickTime movie mode allows users 191 seconds of video at 160 x 120 resolution (15 fps), or 46 seconds at 320 x 240 (15 fps). Shutter speeds are from 1/30 second to 1/10,000 second. Sound can be recorded during the video filming or a 4 second sound byte can be recorded separately for play with a single image. No external microphones are needed as sound is recorded directly from the camera's built-in microphone. The video with sound can be viewed on any television with the included NTSC cable.

Built-In USB Connection
The C-3030 ZOOM now offer a USB connection for the easiest way to download images. Optional Olympus choices for downloading include the optional USB reader, FlashPath floppy disk adapter, PCMCIA adapter for laptops, serial cable, or by inserting the SmartMedia card into the P-330N printer.

Camera Features
The C-3030 ZOOM offers black & white and sepia modes for shooting monochrome images. In the Blackboard/Whiteboard Mode, the appropriate exposure settings are automatically selected for capturing text and ensuring clear, visible writing on the images. ISO's of 100, 200, and 400 are user selectable; and longer, slower shutter speeds are available: up to 16 seconds manual or 1/800 second to ½ second in auto.

The new manual exposure mode allows the shutter and aperture to be selected independently giving greater creative control power to the photographer. An aperture setting of F2.8-F11 or telephoto in 1/3 step increments is available. AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing) offers the photographer an array of exposures (+/- stops in 1/3 step increments) to compare and select the perfect exposures for each image. Along with autofocus, manual focus is now also available for setting any focal distance from 8" to infinity. Focus can be viewed on the LCD monitor before shooting.

The C-3030 ZOOM was built with the consumer as well as professional photographer in mind. For the consumer ease-of-use is key, so the power control was built into a dial and menus and control buttons are now more user-friendly with less steps to achieve a function. Battery power consumption has been improved for longer usability and less frequent battery changes. For the professional, the Olympus FL-40 external flash is available for bounce-flash lighting effects. The C-3030 is especially made to accept the FL-40 flash with the use of the optional TTL cable.

"Although simplicity of operation was clearly a guiding light in the C-3030 ZOOM," said Don Sutherland, President Sutherland Multimedia, Staten Island, NY. "it is much more than a point-and-shoot camera. It's really a professional-caliber camera for a new kind of pro, the Internet photographer. The C-3030 ZOOM provides a large collection of leading-edge features and high picture quality, in a compact form that literally fits the pocket throughout the photographer's day."

Superior Olympus Camera Styling
The C-3030 ZOOM is designed by Olympus, a camera company that understands and excels in camera ergonomics. Its new colorful menu structure further enhances the end user experience. Beautifully designed with the consumer in mind, the camera is lightweight at 10.7 ounces and very compact with dimensions of 4.2" wide x 2.9" high x 2.6" deep.

Unsurpassed Optics and Image Control
Olympus digital cameras are well-known for their exceptionally high-quality images. Images captured with the C-3030 ZOOM produce photographs equivalent to that of many film-based cameras. This is achieved by a number of factors, including a truly world-class all glass 8-element 3X zoom (38-105mm equivalency) with a fast f2.8-f11 aperture range, low compression ratios including an uncompressed mode, and a host of other sophisticated Olympus technologies. The results from the C-3030 ZOOM are truly photographic.

With the C-3030 ZOOM, users have the flexibility of using the 3X optical zoom lens with or without activating the digital telephoto mode. The digital telephoto can be used at any optical focal length with 1.6X, 2.0X, and 2.5X magnification. Use of both the optical zoom and digital telephoto can provide the equivalent of a 260mm lens (for a 35mm camera). The built in 1.8-inch wide-view LCD display automatically activates when choosing the digital Tele/Wide, macro and either of the shutter or aperture preferred modes for through-the-lens composition and "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" results. The macro capability allows the user to get in as close as eight inches, so the C-3030 ZOOM can capture small details. By combining the Macro and Aperture shooting modes, users can move tightly in on small subjects while controlling the depth of field—a feature close-up photography enthusiasts will appreciate.

An image inspection mode allows up to 3X magnification of images on the LCD so the user doesn't have to download images to inspect details. Images can be seen in variable magnifications of 1.5X, 2X, 2.5X or 3X. The area of inspection can even be moved around the image while inspection is in process. In the image inspection mode, the selected magnified areas of the image can to be printed to the Olympus P-330N printer via the SmartMediaTM card. This effectively provides cropping and enlargement in the camera. Also, since the 8, 16, 32 and 64 MB SmartMedia cards (all compatible with the C-3030 ZOOM) can save hundreds of images in one card, the LCD allows 1, 4, 9, or 16 thumbnail images to be previewed at a time, facilitating image reviews. For example, the 4-up review is the prefect aid for comparing the impact of white balance and other variable settings.

C-3030 ZOOM is a Consumer Electronics Camera
The C-3030 ZOOM can be used with or without a computer. It features a standard video out connector for easy viewing of photos on a television, in addition to individual viewing on the LCD. Images can be seen by many people simultaneously on the television and can also be transferred to video tape and sent to relatives and business associates for easy viewing. Users of the C-3030 ZOOM also have the option of creating photo prints, without a computer, through the use of the Olympus P-330 Instant Photo Printer by simply removing the SmartMedia card and inserting it into the printer's own card reader.

A 16MB SmartMedia removable card is included with the camera, but additional 8, 16, 32 and 64MB cards can be used so there is no restriction on the number of photos that can be captured. All SmartMedia cards can be reused, as images can be erased thousand of times.

Olympus brand SmartMedia cards are pre-formatted for immediate use in the camera, and include panorama firmware. In the panorama mode the camera locks the exposure to that of the first image in a panoramic series. The resulting panorama is evenly exposed throughout the image and seams are difficult to detect. The included QuickStitch Panorama stitching software from Enroute Imaging allows multiple images to be joined together for impressive panoramic views of difficult to capture subjects such as the Grand Canyon, the Empire State Building or for real estate and interior home photos, that even the widest angle lens can't capture.

The C-3030 ZOOM includes an 16MB Olympus brand panorama SmartMedia card, remote control, 2 CR-3V Lithium batteries, lens cap, strap, USB and serial cable for PC and Mac, video connection cable for TV or VCR, Adobe PhotoDeluxe image manipulation and creation software, Enroute Imaging QuickStitch panorama stitching software, Olympus Camedia Master Utility Software for downloading images from the camera, and instruction manuals. The C-3030 ZOOM will be available May 2000 with an expected street price of $999. All software supports both Windows and Macintosh computer systems.
