In neurobiology, optogenetics is the application of light stimulation to genetically encoded light reactive opsins allowing control of neural networks. Light stimulation at different wavelengths and with different optogenetic constructs can allow for excitation or inhibition of targeted neural pathways. At least millisecond order precision is required to effectively stimulate such responses.
