White Paper Explores the Need for Ergonomic Guidelines in the GI Endoscopy Suite

As medical professionals, gastroenterologists are deeply familiar with the Hippocratic injunction to “first do no harm,” typically applied to patient care. However, a pressing concern within the gastrointestinal (GI) community points to the necessity of extending this principle to the practitioners themselves.

A new white paper published by Olympus, “What’s Your Position on Ergonomics in the GI Endoscopy Suite?,” examines the often-overlooked topic of ergonomic injuries sustained during endoscopic procedures and offers practical advice for improving workplace safety.

Current Ergonomic Challenges in the Endoscopy Suite

The GI endoscopy suite presents significant physical challenges for practitioners. The repetitive motions and prolonged awkward positions required during procedures can lead to musculoskeletal injuries, affecting physicians’ health and their ability to perform.

In fact, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) guideline authors found that between 39% to 89% of GIs report endoscopic-related injuries (ERIs), and between 20% to 47% of GI fellows report injuries, including hand and finger pain, wrist pain, elbow pain, and more.1

A Push for Advancements and Solutions

“What’s Your Position on Ergonomics in the GI Endoscopy Suite?” discusses the decades of survey data and prominent voices within the gastroenterologist community that are paving the way for ergonomic guidelines aimed at reducing the occurrence of ERIs.

Drawing on design elements and human factors, recommendations include improved equipment handling through scope design and/or ergonomic education, adjustable procedure room layouts, and microbreaks to enhance physician comfort and reduce physical strain.
